25th-Nov-2007 11:10 pm - Anime Gender Recognition meme
Smiley
This was a fairly simple meme quiz. It shows characters (mostly from Naruto it seems) and asks, "Male or Female?"

Your Score: Ooh

You scored 81 perceptiveness!

Not a bad effort, have a cookie!

I'd just like to say that I think it's nifty that the first of the ladies to be shown in the Sakura Wars opening credits is Kohran Li. Just proves that techies rule, especially in steamtech worlds, considering that she doesn't show up until episode six.

Have you ever wondered what the opening credits to The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya would look like if the people who did Cowboy Bebop's credits got the job? Me neither. But then I saw this, and I have to say I like it.

What?

Bed?

Guess I ought to try sleeping tonight, no?
23rd-Apr-2007 01:52 am - Zero no Tsukaima

The above, which seems to be translated as The Familiar of Zero, is the title of another series I think I shall be keeping watch for. Zero is apparently the worst student at her academy of magic. When a new teacher asks for a volunteer among the second year students to try out, "The most basic of alchemy spells" Louise the Zero's volunteering causes quite a deal of fright (with the quiet bookworm student simply walking out into the hall while another student's pleas for a different volunteer provides a distraction).

Poor Louise, she avoids punishment for the damage caused to the classroom only because it's ruled that the teacher was partially at fault for ignoring the warnings of her incompetence from the other students. Unfortunately when some of her classmates taunt her later she declares that she will summon the greatest of all the familiars at the next day's ceremonial familiar summoning. What she gets is a Japanese high school student named Saito. Who only reluctantly agrees to be her familiar after first trying to run away, then spending a night chained up on a pile of straw facing the choice of, "Do my menial chores or I won't bother feeding you."

You know, let's stop feeling sorry for Louise. How about Saito? Pulled from home, a slave in all but name since this fantasy world's laws now only see him as a familiar, with a sorcerer who is more than happy to pass on all the bullying she's received as a master.

This looks like it could be an amusing comic fantasy. Apparently it has been picked up by Geneon, but it doesn't seem to be on the release schedule yet.

The scene, a single high school girl sits in a classroom, becoming ever more lost as a formula for Hohmann transfer orbits fills the white board. When she complains that some of the numbers are seven digits the instructor points out she has been given a calculator. As she looks at the calculator she's stunned by the number of buttons on it, only to be even more shocked by a realization...

"There's no equals key!"
"Of course not! Don't you know reverse Polish calculation?"
"Of course not!"
"Oh, really?" An all to excited look appears on the instructor's face. "In that case I'll take five minutes to cram its operation into your head. When I'm done with you, you'll never be able to use a regular calculator again. Prepare yourself."

Our vict-- er, high school girl has traveled to the Solomon Islands to search for her father who disappeared years before on her parents honeymoon trip. Meanwhile a Japanese company wants to build a new manned rocket to operate from the islands -- their only problem, their current astronaut (on loan from the JSDF) is about forty kilo's too heavy for their only reliable model's payload capacity -- while our main character is actually a couple kilo's less than that target weight. So a deal is struck. The Solomon Islands Space Agency will use its contacts to help search for the missing father, and she will be their astronaut so they can get a successful launch before the end of the year and keep their funding.

I think I'll be keeping my eyes out for this one on DVD. So what if it's still airing in Japan, somebody go and license it already.

EDIT: D'oh! [info]jeriendhal points out I never mentioned the title. The anime in question is called Rocket Girls. If there were still a good nearby independent store that carried anime I'd tell them this is on my guaranteed buy list. (Stuck with the chains as the nearby stores, no point telling the staff there, more than likely will be gone in a few weeks let alone by the time this is licensed and released)

Wanted Dead or Alive, Enemies of All Mankind. For Tenchi haters, sorry, he's only halfway along the list.

Some poking around with Google finds some not-quite-news on the licensing front. It appears that Geneon has bought the domain nanohadvd.com. However there is still no official announcement. My poor, poor bank balance. At least it will probably have at least a year to prepare for the release.

"Allies?"

"We're friends."

My comments on these two lines is spoilerish for Nanoha and Nanoha A's, so behind a cut...

Buried behind the cut, what's buried behind the lines )

Then again it is just a stare that Fate gives Red Head. So maybe all that other stuff is just me.
